Review: Human rights and sex work

In a fully booked red salon, Ruby Rebelde read very personal excerpts from her soon-to-be-published book ‘Why They Hate Us’ and then discussed the background and effects of hostility towards sex work with Christine Nagl. Where does the stigma attached to sex work come from? What different models for regulating sex work exist in Europe and what ideological currents are behind them? Is an abolitionist position even still feminist? In addition to these theoretical discourses, the real problems of sex workers in Salzburg were also examined, which go beyond resentment and structurally discriminate against sex workers, such as the regular forced medical examinations at the public health department, which have already been abolished in all other EU member states, or the restriction of employment opportunities to approved businesses. Good working conditions for sex workers would require the abolition of this degrading special treatment and the legalisation of sex work as an independent activity, without ties to brothels, walk-in brothels or clubs.
